A brief explanation of our approach and the reason behind Runa.
What is Runa?
Runa is a modern payroll, HR, and benefits software designed and built for SMEs in Latin America, led by its CEO and founder, Courtney McColgan, from Silicon Valley.
The platform was born out of Y Combinator—the same accelerator that launched Rappi, Airbnb, Stripe, Dropbox, and many others. It is backed by technology investors such as Salesforce (the world’s leading SaaS platform valued at over $100BN USD) and Ribbit Capital. It is also supported by world-renowned fintech investors behind companies like Nubank, Robinhood, Brex, Credit Karma, and Gusto; as well as the founders of Nubank, Rappi, Gympass, Loft, and executives from modern payroll platforms in the US such as Gusto, Zenefits, and Justworks. Additionally, Runa has the support of Elad Gil (seed investor in Facebook, Airbnb, Gusto, and many more), Paul Buchheit (founder of Gmail), and Aditya Agarwal (former CTO of Dropbox).
Today, we serve more than 3,500 clients and pay over 250,000 employees every month.
How was Runa born?
It all began in 2017 when, after founding two startups in Silicon Valley, Courtney (Runa’s current CEO) moved to Peru and joined Cabify—the ride-sharing app—as CMO. Alongside the team at that time, she helped scale the company from 4 cities in 3 countries to 130 cities in 13 countries. The team rapidly grew to more than 1,000 employees.
Facing the challenges of managing and paying payroll for every employee—and wanting everything centralized in one place—Runa was created in July 2017. Gustavo, Bryam, Fabi, Eduardo, Jorge, and Josué joined Courtney in the mission and built a user-friendly tool that allows companies to centralize all their people information. Shortly after, the decision was made to move everything to Mexico due to the large number of SMEs in the country.
Who do we serve?
We serve SMEs, with the mission of automating and improving their people management and payroll processes. We support more than 3,500 companies across 30+ industries—from small businesses with as few as 5 employees to large ones with more than 5,000.
Although we serve technology companies, most of our clients are not tech-based. They come from very traditional industries such as manufacturing, food services, and many others.
Where are we going?
Runa aims to become the number-one payroll and HR solution for SMEs in Latin America. We began this journey by addressing payroll in Mexico, and later expanded our offering to include more HR modules while operating across the entire Latin American region. We won’t stop until all 21 million SMEs in the region use our solution.
