About Bright

Bright started in 2014 with a simple goal: make solar energy easier to access in Mexico. The company wanted to remove the usual barriers that stop homes and businesses from switching to clean energy. With support from Silicon Valley investors and Y Combinator, Bright grew quickly and built a national presence. Today, more than 100 people work there to help more users move to renewable energy. Its solar rental model is one of the big reasons it works, because customers can use clean energy without paying a large amount upfront. As Bright grew, the inside of the company had to grow too. Payroll and benefits could not stay slow, scattered, or hard to follow. They needed a setup that could keep pace without becoming a tangled cable drawer.

 

What challenges were they facing in payroll and benefits management?

Before Runa, Bright worked with a payroll outsourcing provider. That helped with some tasks, but it also left the People Ops team with limited visibility. As Fanny Wenzel explains, “As People Ops Lead, without having studied accounting, I needed to be sure that our payroll was in expert hands and that our employees could trust the accuracy of their payments.” Employee records, payroll data, taxes, and benefits were not fully in one place, which made compliance and support harder than they needed to be.

Depending on outside providers and manual steps also made the process heavier. Payroll calculations, tax filings, reports, IMSS, and INFONAVIT matters needed constant follow up.
